Our Class Wiki – So Far

For our class wiki, i selected a topic on Gaming. I chose to do a Wiki about the new PS4, which is also has a connection to a topic we did in class which is Virutal worlds. I have been searching for information about it, since its new i wanted to found out if there are any bugs or issues with this new system and the competitor of it. I created the page already and begining to add information soon.

P2P File Sharing

File sharing is a form of sharing information digitally throught storage devices or throught a network. P2P file sharing is a form of file share meaning Peer to Peer. P2P connects people throught a program to their own network for a file sharing between two or more people. Peer to Peer sharing contains games, movies, music, softwares, and photos. An example of a P2P file sharing will be a bittorrent program which lets users share datas throught it accoring to Clive Thompson in “The Bittorrent Effect”, “BitTorrent lets users quickly upload and download enormous amounts of data, files that are hundreds or thousands of times bigger than a single MP3.” Even though it is a great way to file share but this practice alos promotes a illegal concern.

Privacy & Confidentiality

 

            In modern sociality personal information gets stored all over the internet, it can be harmful if the data falls into the wrong hands. That is why Data privacy is an important part of the modern sociality.  There are many types of threats in the internet such as Virus, Email Spoofing, Electronic Spam, Phishing, Overseas Money Transfer Scam, and Trojan Horse Programs. With Application on the portable devices such as smart phones and tablets becomes more popular, people have to worry about App companies misuse people’s personal information and their assets. Companies such as Facebook has millions of people’s information on their data bases, Facebook often take backlashes due to the way they handle people’s information. There are also concerns on how the newer technology exposing personal information without people’s knowing, devices such as GPS and fingerprint scanners can be a problem on personal safety. Government has to regulate to protect citizens from threats of Data Privacy. It is important to know and concern about personal safety, and protect against these privacy issues.

Advice to Baruch College

By using New media, Baruch College can use twitter or Facebook to make announcements that needs to get to all the students. It can implenment a database server that is just for all the information needed for the school courses. There can be a chat server for all the students and professors to connect in real time.

Creativity

Media foster creativity by making people think outside of the box to create something new for people to enjoy. Some people created mash up songs and some with mash up of songs and cartoon characters just like in the article “Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?” by Brooks Barnes “The postings (called mash-ups), are made by editing together snippets of animated movies and TV shows. The finished products look like music videos in which the cartoon characters do the singing. As “Crank That” climbed the music charts over the summer  — the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100  this month .” This new way of media consumption made the whole song and cartoon characters even more popular than what they are before.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

The Virtual Worlds are different way to connect with people around the world. Its a space of one’s imagination. it can be as defined as a second life on the internet. In the article “After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get a Reboot?” by Diane Mehta, she stated the facts that people can connects through the virtual world of Minecraft. “Minecraft is a virtual world. It’s digital LEGOs if you will, but it’s a space for kids to exercise their imagination and to connect with others to also want to build and create things. And it’s the biggest phenomenon today. “Virtual worlds” may end up needing another name, but Minecraft is a game-changer.” Today workplace can also be placed into a virtual world. many companies has been trying to save budgets and bringing meetings in the Virtual World. in the aritcle “Going to the virtual office in Second Life” by Mark Tutton he stated “Virtual community Second Life is seeking to tap into that market by creating a new tool that allows businesses to have virtual meetings on their own computer networks.” The pros of virtual worlds are that it can be used remotely to bring people together, and it creates and second life on a different world. The cons of the virtual world is that people spend more time on the virtual world than in the real world. The future of virtual world i hope it will be more realistic and feels like we are in the virtual world.

Social Networking Sites

Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and LinkedIn are the four social network sites i chose for this blog. Twitter compare to the other three is more of a news feed which updates fast and simple, with less customization. Facebook i think is the most “social” out of the four because it lets users upload tons of pictures and tag them as you wish for friends and families, its also makes finding friends easier on the internet. Myspace is similar to Facebook but its more of the customized page for yourself and others to view. LinkedIn is more professional where people uses it to share their work experiences and to apply jobs.

Blog about Twitter

There are some similarity between twitter and our class discussion. They both let users comment on a post, and both lets users express their ideas. There are many differences though, in our class discussion board users can write unlimited letters where as in twitter only 140 letters are allowed. Replying in twitter is simply hatch tag users name where as our class discussion needs to create another entry just to reply an comment. Twitter updates in real time so people may use it as a news feed where our class discussion board can use as a discussion to solve a problem.

Social Networking has been huge part of this generation. People use social networking for both social and profession.  Now more people looks for jobs through these networks as stated in the article, “Is MySpace Good for Society? A Freakonomics Quorum.” by Stephen J. Dubner “Anecdotal evidence of positive outcomes from these technologies — such as political activities organized via Facebook or jobs found through LinkedIn.” Socially people also strengthen relationships through the use of social network as stated in the same article. “they used the site to look up old high school acquaintances, to find out information about people in their classes or dorms that might be used to strike up a conversation, to get contact information for friends, and many other activities. ” These are positive things about social networks, but there is a dark side as well. People who uses social network are always open to scams, its all over the internet. in the article “BBB: New Wave of Phishing Scams Uses Facebook Info for Personalized Spam” it stated how a scam works to harm “You receive an email that appears to be sent by a friend or family member. The message addresses you by name, but the content is strange. Usually, it’s just a link to a website. If you click on it, you could end up downloading malware to your computer.” Today there are social networking sites for everything from Looking for jobs, looking for dates, and most commonly looking for friends, in the future i hope this technology will evolve to more of a secure place to people to interact.
